NIH will stop special review of gene therapy experiments

Release date: 2014-05-29

The NIH's special review of gene therapy is a milestone in the field of gene therapy. The Recombinant DNA Research Council (RAC) is an organization set up by NIH 40 years ago to review gene therapy processes and safety. The organization reviews every process related to gene therapy during the 1980s. Of these, 20% will refer to discussions at public meetings. But with the development of technology and the maturity of the field, the risks of gene therapy are no longer as great as before. At the same time, the use of gene therapy for clinical trials has been reviewed and regulated by the Ethics and Biosafety Committee and the FDA . Therefore, the RAC review is somewhat redundant. A meeting of the American Institute of Medicine in December 2013 recommended that the NIH should abolish this redundant review of gene therapy. After discussion and research, NIH decided to discontinue special review of gene therapy experiments from May 2014.
