Researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel have said that they convert fat cells into stem cells and culture them into tissues for the treatment of various organ damages such as the heart and brain. Based on cells taken entirely from the subject, they have produced the first individualized tissue implants. After the success of animal experiments, they hope to conduct human trials soon.
In modern medical practice, tissue implants that are commonly used are not from the patient itself, and thus have potential immune system rejection and associated risks. The Tel Aviv University research team succeeded in creating organ implants using transformed stem cells to minimize these risks.
Professor Tale Deville of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology and Materials Science and Engineering at Tel Aviv University, the researchers sought to use the cells of experimental animals to create 100% compatible implants for their various organs, namely Adipose tissue cells are extracted from the subject animal and then converted to stem cells which are manipulated to produce any tissue type desired by the body.
Professor Deville said that they have the ability to differentiate adipose tissue cells into different cell types and culture them into various tissue implants for the heart, spinal cord, and cortex to treat different diseases. He believes that this new technology can be used to obtain any tissue implant that effectively regenerates any diseased or injured organ, such as a diseased heart, a brain after trauma or Parkinson's disease, and a damaged spinal cord. In addition, it can also be used for cosmetic surgery. (Reporter Mao Li)
