Chlorophyll fluorescence technology is one of the most important non-destructive measurement techniques for detecting plant growth and stress. It is not only suitable for measuring leaves, but also for measuring chlorophyll-containing fruits. At the same time, during the ripening process, the pigments and biochemical components such as sugar, chlorophyll, polyphenols, nitrogen and anthocyanins will change accordingly. Reflective spectroscopy is the best tool for nondestructive testing of these components.
The project initially used WINEPEN chlorophyll fluorescence and spectrometers developed by PSI (Photon Systems Instruments) specifically for this project.

The results show that there are significant changes in the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum in different growth stages. The reflectance spectra of green and red fruits are very different, indicating that their pigment composition and related biochemical components are greatly different. This provides a scientific basis for quantitative analysis of grape growth dynamics and quality identification.
As technology advances, the instruments used in this type of research have evolved from handheld chlorophyll fluorescence and spectrometers to chlorophyll fluorescence imagers and hyperspectral imagers. Researchers can measure multiple fruits and even whole grape ears at the same time. When performing blade measurements, it is also possible to obtain comprehensive data and corresponding images of the entire blade, rather than the limited data that only the previous handheld instrument can only measure one point of the blade.
