In response to the prevalence and variation of influenza viruses, they believe that finding endogenous broad-spectrum antiviral factors from the host is an important way to curb the influenza virus. According to Meng Yidong, the influenza virus mainly infects the respiratory tract and lung epithelial cells of humans, livestock and poultry. They found that the vast majority of microRNAs in epithelial cells inhibit the replication of influenza viruses.
The high-throughput screening of the team identified 297 high-abundance microRNAs that inhibit viral replication in lung epithelial cells and further selected five that significantly inhibited the virus. These five microRNAs can directly target the mRNA of influenza virus, inhibit the replication of influenza virus, or inhibit viral replication by targeting the host gene.
In the experiment, the combination of these five microRNAs was effective in protecting mice from lethal attacks by viruses. Fang Min said, "The five endogenous microRNAs we have have a broad spectrum of anti-influenza virus functions, and microRNAs are easy to synthesize in large quantities, so it is expected to develop into a new drug for the prevention and treatment of influenza."
